Dave: God may not want you to tithe.
Jeff: Don’t freak out..
Dave: The Old Testament law required a tithe, so, many people believe a tithe is what is required.
Jeff: If you want to go by Old Testament standards get out your checkbook, because there were actually three different tithes.
Dave: It’s possible one of them was only given every 3 years, but the point is: they gave 20-30% of their income every year, before any free will offerings!
Jeff: 10% was to their Spiritual leaders, Priests etc. 10% was for the Temple and 10% was for the poor.
Dave: So, if you want to be a stickler for the Old Testament, go ahead.
Jeff: Some do argue that the single 10% tithe was started before the Law was, but here’s what we like to focus on:
Dave: 2 Corinthians 9 and Matthew 6:21.
Jeff: 2 Corinthians tells us to decide in our heart what to give – not under compulsion and to be GENEROUS. Period.
Dave: And Jesus tells us (in Matthew 6) that where our treasure is, that’s where our hearts will be.
