Dave: James 5:14-15 says, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of
the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well”Jeff: Many people teach this verse is about physical healing.
Dave: Of course we believe in physical healing, and miracles.
Jeff: Absolutely.
Dave: But that’s not what this verse is about…
Jeff: First look at the context. James is talking about sin and emotional stability.
Dave: So a verse about physical healing would be out of place.
Jeff: Plus this Greek word translated “sick” is more often translated “spiritually
weak” in the Epistles.Dave: So it really says something like “Is anyone among you spiritually weak? Call
the elders and pray…”Jeff: Yes! And that helps us understand why James ends by saying, “They’ll be
healed and if they have sinned they’ll be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins!”Dave: It’s a Spiritual or emotional condition, not a physical one.
