Dave: Why did God command that the Caannanites be slaughtered?
Jeff: Joshua 10:40 says that Joshua, Isreal’s leader, “left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed.”
Dave: WHOA! He killed woman, and children… even babies?
Jeff: Well, it says he left no survivors…
Dave: But, Jeff, in Joshua 16:10 it says, “to this day the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim.” So, did he slaughter them all, or did they survive?
Jeff: If you’re watching a football game and your team wins 56 – 10, how would you describe that?
Dave: A slaughter. We annihilated those losers. We killed ’em!
Jeff: But, you don’t actually kill anyone. You just use hyperbole to describe your big win.
Dave: Likewise, it was common back then, as it is today, to describe victories in terms of complete annihilation, even if it was a simple victory.
Jeff: God wasn’t really slaughtering men, women, and children. God’s word has the same freedom of expression as you or I do.
Dave: But, we must admit that some Canaanites were killed. More on that, in the next Truth Shot.
