Dave: Jeff, what do you think about Joel Osteen? He seems to be a happy guy!
Jeff: He does. When I listen to him, I feel good. As far as I can tell, he genuinely loves Jesus.
Dave: But, what about his teachings – are they correct?
Jeff: Well, that’s where the danger comes in. One example of how he twists Scripture was from a sermon he did quoting Colossians 3:2.
Dave: Osteen quotes it saying, “Set your minds on higher things and keep it set.” Then he explains, “The higher things are positive things” and gives a lesson on positive thinking and how it can bring us health and wealth.
Jeff: Positive thinking is good. But it doesn’t ‘create your reality. In fact, reality is that Colossians 3:2-3 says, “Set your minds on things above, NOT ON EARTHLY THINGS! For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
Dave: Collossians 3 is not about wealth, or promotions. It’s about YOU ARE DEAD! This world has nothing for us!
Jeff: We must be very careful when listening to any preacher (me included). God’s words must be interpreted God’s way.
