Dave: Most Christians have heard that Jesus came to take our place on the cross. He was punished, so we wouldn’t have to be.
Jeff: But did you know that isn’t the only view of Jesus’ atonement?
Dave: In the Christus Victor view of the atonement, we see Jesus as a victorious Lord who triumphed over evil by being raised from the dead thus destroying the work of Satan and freeing humanity from the bondages of sin.
Jeff: 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 gives this victorous idea: When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
Dave: In addition, the Christus Victor view is dated to the early Church Fathers!
Jeff: Historical support doesn’t necessary prove something true, but the fact it was taught for one-thousand years from Christianities’ early history forward should, at least, force us to deeply consider this view.
Dave: Think about it. 1 John 3:8 says, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”
